The Danger of Self-Reliance In a world hungry for security, success, and fulfilment, it is tempting to believe that we can meet life's most basic needs through our own strength. However, the Scripture reminds us that this thirst can only be satisfied through God's provision. Jesus told the church in Smyrna, "Do not fear what you are about to suffer." "Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life" (Revelation 2:10). Self-reliance may appear reasonable in the moment; however, it is an undetected or invisible kind of rebellion. John Calvin, who lived in the 16th century, said, “Ignorance of God’s providence is the greatest of all miseries.” At the same time, the prophet Jeremiah warns, "Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord" (Jeremiah 17:5-6). Some trust in their savings and resources, jobs, and families, but such trust is in "the arm of flesh" (2 Chronicles 32:8), and you will never secure the future God has planned for you. It is only leading to frustration and spiritual dryness. Isaiah rebuked Israel for relying on Egypt rather than the Lord (Isaiah 31:1). This demonstrates that misplaced trust in human power is both dangerous and dishonours God. True strength is found in surrendering, not to oneself, but to God's sovereignty. Faith entails trusting in God’s guidance, even when the path ahead is uncertain. The psalmist declares, "Some trust in chariots and horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God" (Psalm 20:7). This is not passive waiting but active dependence. Plan with prayer, working with humility, and trusting that God's wisdom far exceeds our own. When we shift from self-reliance to God-reliance, we discover that our deepest needs are met. This is not because we control the future, but because we are grounded in His sovereign will.
